One of the flaws of the religious world today is the constant calling for people to be saved, but no one knows what they are supposed to be saved from. If I ran up to you and told you need to be saved, but never told you why you needed to be saved or what you needed to be saved from, then you are going to ignore my message and consider me to be a lunatic. The scripture are clear about the need for salvation and why we need to be saved. In today’s lesson we are going to look at God’s message to us as to what we need to be saved from, how we are saved, and what we are saved for.

Amos 5 began with a funeral song sung by Amos for the nation of Israel. The requirements of God were very simple. They should have been seeking the Lord, but not with their false worship and pious pretenses. The people should have seek the Lord in humility and in goodness. But the people failed to seek the Lord and find true life. Therefore, Amos has sung the words, “Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel” (5:2). The rest of chapters five and six describe the coming judgment through a serious of woes.

The year is 605 BC, the year of the Babylonian invasion by Nebuchadnezzar into the nation of Judah. This was the first of three invasions until Jerusalem was captured, the nation destroyed, and the majority of the people are carried away into captivity. Jehoakim is the king of Judah at this time and God is going to give his prophetic message one more time to warn his people of the coming invasion and destruction.

John has let us know the Word, who is the eternal God in whom is light and life, became flesh and made his dwelling among us. God came back to his people. The glory of the Lord had returned to the earth. In Jesus, God and humanity meet and Jesus reveals the immense glory of God. That revelation was like no other revealing of God. We have seen the glory of the one and only Son. Jesus is the revealing of God’s covenant faithfulness and grace.
