Repentance and Restoration (Luke 13:1-9)

The thirteenth chapter of Luke begins a section in which Luke is going to describe for us the nature of the kingdom of God. Jesus is going teach us what the kingdom of God is like and who belongs in God’s kingdom. The first verse begins with a tragic event.

The Lion Has Roared (Amos 3)

One of the problems with being the chosen people of God is that we think we are the chosen people of God. We lose humility and begin to think of ourselves as important before God. God repeatedly challenges the arrogant thinking that we are special. Israel believed that because they were the chosen people of God that they were special because of their obedience to God and therefore would avoid judgment. Judgment would happen to the world, but the chosen people of God would be spared. God tried from the beginning to warn the people against this kind of foolish thinking.

Your Covenant With God (Psalm 101)

As we enter a new year it is very popular to engage in the practice of New Year’s resolutions. Most resolutions are about physical things… There are any number of resolutions that we tend to make, whether written down or simply as a desire within us to do better. Humans seem to be goal oriented. We need to a goal to set before our eyes and then give our effort to reach that goal. The apostle Paul spoke in goal oriented terms when he said that he pressed on to the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus… In our lesson today we are going to explore the resolutions of David and the commitments that he makes before his God. As we read these I am calling upon each of us to make the same godly resolutions for our lives.
